Bringing a Desktop CNC Mill into the EU: Customs, Power, and Local Support
If you're buying a US-made 5-axis CNC mill from inside the EU, three friction points show up: customs duty and VAT on import, AC power and grounding compatibility, and what happens when a bearing fails. Here's how CycleCNC removes all three.
For most EU customers, the trickiest part of buying a Pocket NC isn't the machine choice — it's logistics. We hear three recurring concerns from engineers and shop owners considering the import: customs surprises, power compatibility, and after-sales support distance. This post addresses each directly, with the actual numbers.
1. Customs and VAT on direct US import
If you buy a Pocket NC directly from Penta Machine in the United States and self-import to Germany, the process looks like this:
- Customs duty — CNC milling machines fall under HS code 8458.11. EU import duty rate is 2.7%.
- Import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) — 19% in Germany, applied on (machine value + shipping + duty). This is reclaimable if your business is VAT-registered, but only on the German side and after you've fronted the cash.
- Customs broker fee — typically €120–250 for a one-off shipment if you don't have a broker on retainer.
- Lead time penalty — direct import means the machine sits at Frankfurt or Hamburg customs for 3–10 days while paperwork clears. We've seen 14-day holds when the commercial invoice was incomplete.
The cash-flow impact is the worst part. On a €20,000 machine, you front roughly €4,540 in VAT and duty before you can take delivery. Reclaiming the VAT takes a quarterly cycle minimum.

2. Power: do EU 230 V networks need adaptation?
Short answer: no. Pocket NC machines ship with an EU-spec power supply (230 V, 50 Hz, single phase) when ordered through CycleCNC. The internal control electronics are universal-input, so a US-spec unit would also work on EU power, but the wall plug, cord, and CE-marked emergency-stop wiring meet German DGUV/VDE expectations when sold via the EU distribution path.
Practical install requirements:
- Wall socket — standard Schuko 16 A is more than sufficient. Peak draw is under 800 W.
- Grounding — the chassis must be properly earthed for CE compliance. Any modern German workshop outlet satisfies this; old buildings on TT or TN-C networks may need a quick electrician check.
- UPS — recommended but optional. A 1 kVA online UPS keeps the machine from corrupting a running G-code in the event of a brownout. Budget €350–500 for an APC Smart-UPS 1000.
- Compressed air — only if you run an air mist setup. The machine itself doesn't need shop air to operate.
3. After-sales support: what happens when something fails?
This is the question that keeps prospective buyers up at night. CNC machines are mechanical assemblies — bearings wear, sensors drift, occasionally a stepper driver fails. The relevant questions:
How fast can I get a spare part?

What language is the support in?

What's the warranty?
6 months under CycleCNC AGB §8(3)(e), covering parts and labour for manufacturing defects. The 6-month period is European statutory minimum for B2B sales and aligns with how the machine is actually used in industrial settings. Extended Penta Machine factory coverage stacks on top for major sub-assemblies. We do not extend the warranty to 12 months — that's a commercial decision, not a quality statement.
Can I get an annual maintenance contract?
Yes — CycleCNC offers an annual maintenance contract product for Pocket NC machines: scheduled inspection, calibration check, way-cover inspection, software updates, and consumables replacement. €1,500/year for Pocket NC V2-50 (CHB or CHK).
The bottom line on local distribution
The €1,500–2,500 you'd theoretically save by importing direct typically evaporates the first time you need a part, the first time you have a customs hold, or the first hour you spend on a Slack thread with a US-based support team six time zones away. Local distribution exists because the operational friction of cross-border industrial equipment is real, and the EU's customs-and-VAT machinery doesn't optimize for individual buyers.

Do you ship outside Germany?

Is the machine CE-marked?
